Browser + OS Support

The requirements depend on how you print. Browser previews, shipping-label capture, and queued printing use different parts of Autoprinter.

Choose your workflow#

Workflow Requirements
Open Autoprinter and preview documents Access to Shopify admin in a supported browser
Print a document or combined Print Chain preview through the browser Your browser's printing support and an available printer
Capture Shopify shipping labels automatically Google Chrome on a computer, with the paired Autoprinter Chrome Extension
Print queued documents or labels A supported computer running the paired Desktop Utility, with printers assigned
Print documents on Shopify order events A Print Station and Automatic Printing enabled; the Chrome Extension is not required

The label-capture computer and printer computer can be different machines. See Print Stations & Label Sources.

How it works
Which part of Autoprinter does what?
The Chrome Extension captures purchased labels. The Desktop Utility prints queued work. Browser previews can print without either companion app.

Chrome Extension#

Google Chrome, latest stable version, is the supported browser for label capture. Keep Chrome and the extension updated.

Other Chromium-based desktop browsers may accept the extension, but they are not our tested support target. An extension installing successfully does not guarantee that Shopify label capture works there. Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers are not supported for Autoprinter's label-capture extension.

Install through the direct Autoprinter Chrome Web Store listing. The listing is unlisted, so use this link rather than searching the store. Chrome delivers extension updates automatically.

If your organization blocks extensions, ask your administrator to allow the Autoprinter listing. Contact support if they need deployment details.

Desktop Utility#

Operating system Desktop Utility support
macOS 13 Ventura or later Supported; Intel and Apple Silicon
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit Supported; Windows installer
Earlier macOS versions, Linux, ChromeOS Not supported
iOS, iPadOS, Android Cannot run the Desktop Utility

Download the current version from Desktop Utility downloads. If you are downloading for another computer, use the direct Windows installer or Mac installer.

The Mac installer is signed and notarized. The Windows installer is code-signed as Econocraft Materials LLC; Windows SmartScreen can still show a reputation warning. Check that you downloaded from the official link and that the publisher matches before continuing.

Follow the Setup Guide to install and pair it.

Printers#

The Desktop Utility uses printers installed in your computer's operating system. Install the manufacturer's driver if needed and confirm you can print a test page before assigning the printer in Autoprinter.

  • Label printer: a printer configured for 4 × 6-inch labels.
  • Document printer: a printer configured for Letter or A4 sheets.
  • Receipt printer: a printer configured for 80 mm or 58 mm roll paper. Load the roll that matches your template.
  • USB and network printers can be used when the printer computer can reach them.

Select the appropriate printer in the Desktop Utility's Printers card on Windows or macOS. You need only the printer types used by your workflow. Printer drivers, paper settings, and hardware vary; if a computer test page works but Autoprinter printing does not, see Printer Troubleshooting.

Network and power#

The Desktop Utility needs an internet connection and outbound HTTPS access to Autoprinter at app.autoprinter.app, plus access to any external shipping-label download URLs used by your jobs. The label-capture browser must also be able to reach Shopify, Autoprinter, and Shopify's label download hosts.

The printer computer needs a working USB or local-network connection to its printers. No inbound internet port needs to be opened for Autoprinter.

Keep that computer awake and the Desktop Utility running for queued printing. See the “Keep your computer awake” section in Printer Troubleshooting.

Mobile and tablets#

A phone or tablet cannot host Autoprinter's Chrome Extension or Desktop Utility. Opening the Shopify app interface on a mobile device does not make label capture available there.

A separate supported printer computer can handle server-triggered Automatic Printing. For browser-print previews, printing behavior depends on the device and Shopify's available print actions; use a desktop browser for the documented setup and printing workflows.
