Print quotes from draft orders

Updated · 4 min read

On this page

Turn a Shopify draft order into a branded price quote that matches your invoices. Quotes are made for wholesale and B2B selling: send a customer a quote, and when they accept, Shopify turns the draft into an order.

Quotes print in your browser. They never go to a Print Station, they never use Print Rules or the Print Chain, and they never count toward your monthly orders. They are free on every plan.

Turn on a Quote template#

  1. Open Templates and choose Quotes.
  2. Turn on Default Quote under Built-in template, or click Browse samples, choose Quotes and Download a design: Ledger, Meridian, Maison, Garden, Aurora, Carbon or Press. Each one matches the invoice of the same name, so your quotes and invoices look like one set.
  3. Open the template to change it. The built-in Quote lets you set the title (for example "Estimate" or "Proposal"), the quote number label, how many days the quote is valid, whether to show product images and SKUs, the pay online link, and your notes and terms.

The Quotes tab. New installs start with the built-in Quote off: turn it on with the switch, or use Browse samples for a design that matches your invoices.Scroll across the illustration to see the full view.

The first Quote template you turn on becomes the default. To make another one the default, choose Set as default on it.

Allow Autoprinter to read draft orders#

Quotes need permission to read draft orders. The first time you open Autoprinter after this feature arrived, Shopify asks you to approve the update. Approve it, then print your quote. Until you do, the Print quote window says "Open Autoprinter in your Shopify admin to allow quotes, then try again."

  1. In Shopify, open Orders → Drafts and open the draft order.
  2. Choose More actions → Print quote.
  3. Your Quote templates are on the left, with the default selected. Pick another to switch. The right side shows the quote number, the customer and the total.
  4. Choose Open quote. The quote opens in a new tab with your browser's print dialog. Print it, or choose Save as PDF to email it.
  1. In Orders → Drafts, select up to 50 draft orders.
  2. Choose More actions → Print quotes.
  3. Choose Open quote. Every quote prints in one document, each on its own page.

If a draft can't be built, the window names it ("1 quote couldn't be built: #D1042") and the rest still print. A draft Shopify is still calculating, or one that changes while it is read, is left out rather than printed with old numbers. Open it again in a moment.

What a quote shows#

  • Your logo, store name and contact details, and the customer's business and address under Prepared for.
  • Each item with its quantity, unit price and amount, then the subtotal, discounts, shipping, tax and the quote total, in the currency the customer will pay in.
  • Valid until: the date the draft was created plus the days you set (30 by default). Leave the days empty to hide the line.
  • Pay this quote online: Shopify's checkout link for the draft, with a QR code your customer can scan to review and pay. It prints only when the draft has a checkout link.
  • Once the customer accepts and Shopify completes the draft, the quote shows Accepted and the order number it became.

A quote never shows payment received, a balance or shipping status: those belong to the order the draft becomes.

Preview with your own draft orders#

In the template editor, Preview data offers Sample, Latest draft order and Draft #. Type a draft number such as #D1042 to preview a real draft.

For custom templates, the variable list has a Quote group: {{order.invoice_url}} (the checkout link), {{order.draft_status}}, {{order.converted_order_name}}, {{quote.valid_until}} and {{customer.company_name}}. See Template variables.
