Multi-Location Printing

Updated · 4 min read

On this page

If your store fulfills orders from more than one location, Autoprinter can print each location's documents separately — and route them to the printer at that location.

What happens automatically#

When Shopify assigns an order's items to more than one fulfillment location (a "split delivery"), a packing-slip print produces one packing slip per location, each listing only the items shipping from that location. The document type must be selected for printing and have a usable template. The same applies to return slips and gift receipts — any document that travels inside the box.

Invoices don't split. When selected for printing, an invoice covers the complete order and its full totals rather than producing a separate invoice for each location. Your copy settings still apply.

An order assigned to one known location still produces one document set, and its location can be used by rules and templates.

Send each location's documents to its own printer#

To make the printer at each location print only that location's documents:

  1. Pair a Print Station at each location — do this first. Install the desktop app on a computer at each location and pair it from the Printer Setup page. Until you have more than one Print Station, the Print Station selector in step 2 stays greyed out: with a single station there is nothing to choose between, so everything goes there automatically.
  2. Create one Print Rule per location. On the Print Rules page, add a rule with the condition Fulfillment Location equals your location's name exactly as it appears in Shopify under Settings → Locations (for example, Downtown Store). Then set the rule's Print Station selector to the device at that location.
  3. Repeat for each location and each document type you want to route. Rules are scoped to their document type; a packing-slip rule does not also route gift receipts.

The matching rule sends each location's package documents to its selected station. This covers every order assigned to that location, not just split ones: an order shipping entirely from Downtown Store routes to Downtown Store's printer too. It also works with Automatic Printing: with the "when fulfilled" trigger, each shipment prints at the location it ships from, as it ships.

Tip: the rule matches the location's name, not its ID. If you rename a location in Shopify, update the matching rule too.

How it works
One order · two fulfillment locations
Example routing: each location’s packing slip lists its own items and uses its matching rule’s Print Station. Invoices continue to cover the whole order.

Show the location on your documents#

Templates can display which location a document belongs to using these variables:

Variable Shows
{{fulfillment_location.name}} The location's name
{{fulfillment_location.address1}}, {{fulfillment_location.address2}} Street address
{{fulfillment_location.city}}, {{fulfillment_location.province}}, {{fulfillment_location.zip}}, {{fulfillment_location.country}} City / region / postal code / country (country is a two-letter code, e.g. "US")
{{fulfillment_location.phone}} The location's phone number

These fill in whenever the document belongs to a known location — including orders that ship entirely from one location. On invoices for split orders (which always cover the whole order) they're empty, so it's safe to add them to any template.

Verify the location and understand fallbacks#

Rule Tester does not currently simulate per-location document rendering. Use it for ordinary order conditions, but check a split order's document preview and the destination recorded in Print History when verifying location routing.

If location assignments are unavailable, Autoprinter falls back to whole-order documents. Location conditions do not match without location context, so configure a sensible default template and station. For a split order's fulfillment event, if the shipped location cannot be identified, package documents can be generated for all assigned locations instead of only one.

Approving the updated permission#

Reading location assignments requires a Shopify permission added in August 2026. If you installed Autoprinter before then, Shopify will show a one-time "update permissions" prompt the next time you open the app — until you approve it, split orders keep printing as single whole-order documents (nothing breaks; you just don't get the per-location split yet).

Frequently asked#

Does a split order count more than once against my monthly order limit? No. A unique order counts once within the current monthly allowance period, regardless of its locations or document count. Printing the same order in a later period can count again. See the Billing FAQ.

What about pick slips? Pick slips are a batch-level picking worksheet and currently always cover the full selection of orders. Use the bulk Print picker to create one for your selected orders.
